In this post, I hope to answer all of your question about animal encounters at the Australia Zoo. Want to know what else you can do at the Australia Zoo? How Early Should You Book an Encounter?

These encounters only happen once or twice a day and have a limited amount of spots, so you should plan on booking your encounter several months before your visit. I would recommend initially checking the openings on the Australia Zoo website six months before your encounter. As soon as you know what day you are going to visit the zoo, book your encounter! This was a highlight of my trip to Australia, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Australia Zoo! I know these experiences are a bit expensive, but they are so worth it!

What About Photos?

During your encounter, you are free to take as many photos as you want! There is a professional photographer at each encounter as well, so you can look at the photos later and decide if you want to purchase any. You can purchase one photo, a few, or get all of your photos on a flash drive to take home. With each encounter, you also get a magnet with your favorite photo from the encounter as a souvenir!

Review of Encounters

Each encounter is a little different, so look up what each entails before booking. Everyone in my family did the koala encounter and one additional encounter of our choosing. Some of us met lemurs while others chose the red panda. Here is what we have to say about these encounters:

Koala

Meeting a koala is an obvious choice as they are native to Australia and you really can’t meet them anywhere else. When you meet a koala, you get to hold it as seen in the photo above. The zookeeper said they hold onto you because they think you’re a tree. Any movement will scare them, so you have to stay as still as possible. This was hard for me because I felt like I was holding a (very heavy) baby, so I naturally wanted to rock. This encounter consisted of standing there for a few minute and taking some photos, which was a cool experience. That being said, everyone in my group agreed it was our least favorite of our encounters.

Red Panda

My family members who met the red panda said it was a really cool experience! When it was first brought out it wandered around and greeted everyone which is adorable! Each person was given some food and a chance to have the red panda sit on their lap. You can see this moment pictured above! He was very friendly and loved the attention. My mom went on this encounter, and she said she would definitely recommend it to others!

Ring-Tailed Lemurs

I went on this encounter as well as the koala one, and I have to say this one was much more interactive. The Australia Zoo has a “lemur island” which you get to by riding a small barge. We were greeted by lemurs as soon as we stepped on the island! We started the encounter by taking photos with a lemur on our shoulders, then sat and fed them.

One thing different about this encounter is that we were on an island with a bunch of lemurs, where in the other encounters one animal was brought to us. This made a big difference as we could watch the lemurs interact with each other. We also had several climbing on us at once! Our handfuls of food were quickly snatched away, but not before taking some selfies! I could honestly sit there and watch them for hours, it was such a cool experience! I would HIGHLY recommend the lemur encounter to anyone visiting the Australia Zoo!

Overall, this is an amazing experience I would recommend for anyone! Be sure to book early so you don’t miss out! Book here!

Anna’s Pick of the Week

The Australia Zoo is not in a large city, so you will need to find a ride from your hotel to the zoo. I recommend staying in Brisbane so you can take the Croc Express to the zoo! This way you don’t need to deal with a rental car or pay for an expensive taxi. Check out how to book the Croc Express here!

What To Do at the Australia Zoo (Steve Erwin Zoo)

Statue of Steve Erwin and his family at the Australia Zoo.

Steve Erwin was known around the world for his caring nature and love for animals. His legacy lives on today through his family and the zoo they continue to run. I loved visiting the Australia Zoo, especially because I know the animals there were saved or rescued. If you are in the area, I highly recommend checking it out. I saw so many animals I had never seen before! There are also plenty of things to do! Here’s everything you need to know before heading to the Steve Erwin Zoo:

  • Where is it?
  • How much does it cost?
  • What animals can you see?
  • What else is there to do?

Where Is the Australia Zoo?

The Australia Zoo is located at 1638 Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah QLD 4519, Australia. Since the zoo is in Beerwah, that is naturally a good place to stay if you want to be close. If you are wanting to stay on the water, Caloundra and Currimundi are nearby costal towns you may want to consider staying at. Use the map below to check out hotels near Australia Zool!

How Much Does It Cost?

A basic ticket costs $60 for an adult, $35 for a child age 3-24, or $47 for a student. There are also family bundles: $172 for two adults and two kids, or $189 for two adults and three kids. There are also added bonuses if you want to do the hospital sneak peek, an animal encounter, or any of the other experiences mentioned below. This zoo is so large you may need two days to see it all, so there are two-day passes available on their website as well. Check out all of the ticket prices and purchase your tickets here!

What Animals Can You See?

The Australia Zoo is home to over 100 different kids of animals! My favorites where the animals that come to mind when I think of Australia – kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and of course, crocodiles! It was fun to see animals I had never heard of, such as the echidna, and animals I had heard of but had never seen, such as the Tasmanian devil. Although seeing these animals was amazing, the coolest experience was doing an animal encounter! Read more about my animal encounter experience in my other post: Steve Erwin Zoo – Animal Encounters! To see the updated list of all the animals in the zoo, visit their website here.

What Else Is There To Do?

Animal Encounters

Although this experience is not cheap at around $99 per person, it is an amazing experience! Getting to hug a koala or feed lemurs is sure to be a highlight of your trip! When people ask me what I did on my trip to Australia, I always mention meeting lemurs, koalas, and kangaroos at the Australia Zoo! I’m going to write a whole post about these experiences. Subscribe so you don’t miss it!

Wildlife Hospital Tour

If you are interested in learning more about animals and how the zoo takes care of them, this tour may be right for you! Go behind the scenes to see what work is being done at the zoo. This tour is affordable at $19 per adult and $9 per child, and the profits go directly to the wildlife hospital. You will want to book this experience early as there are only two tours a day (2:30pm and 3:30pm) and only eight people are allowed on each tour. Learn more about this tour here!

Segway Back of House Tour

Nobody in my family had never ridden Segway before, so we thought this was the perfect place to do it! They are actually pretty easy to get the hang of, and a lot of fun! Going on this tour gave me a greater understanding of how large this zoo really is, and I got to learn more about how the keepers take care of the animals. Riding the Segway path also gave us a great view of the rhinos and a closer look at the meerkat exhibit. I would definitely recommend this tour – especially if you have never ridden a Segway before! This 45 minute ride costs $60 per person. Book your Segway tour here!

Hire a Caddie Tour

My family did not personally go on this tour as we like to explore on our own, but if you prefer going on guided tours this may be for you! On this tour, a group of 2-4 is escorted through the zoo by a knowledgeable tour guide. These $499 tours last 5 hours, so there is room before and after the tour to explore on your own. The total time of the tour includes the time spent watching shows and going on animal encounters, so you may want to book those before or after the tour to make the most of your time. If you want to book a caddie tour, visit their site here.

Platinum Zoo Adventure

Platinum Zoo Adventure tours last the entire day: 8am – 5pm. The price is not listed online, so you will need to contact the zoo here to find out pricing and booking information. Typically when you need to contact someone to get the price, it’s going to be expensive. You do get a lot in this package, so I can see why it would cost more. A group of up to four people get a VIP tour of the wildlife hospital, 6 animal encounters, morning and afternoon tea, lunch, and more! It really is the VIP experience! You will need to book these tours far ahead of time, so contact the zoo now if this tour is right for you!

I have personally been on the Segway tour and went on an animal encounter. Have you done any of the other tours? Let me know in the comments!

Anna’s Pick of the Week

When I travel, I know I’m going to take a lot of pictures while also being very active. This means I want to be comfortable while still looking stylish! Old Navy has the best of both worlds which is why I love them for both travel and my daily duties as a teacher. Check out their site using this link!

Hop On Hop Off Bus – The Best Way to See Sydney, Australia

Hop on hop off busses are popping up in big cities all around the world, and I have been on several myself. I can say from experience that these busses are the best way to see all the tourist attractions at any location! The bus in Sydney, Australia was amazing because it hit every key place we wanted to see and more! In this post, I am going to go over everything you need to know about the hop-on-hop-of bus in Australia!

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What is a Hop On Hop Off Bus?

A hop on hop off bus is exactly what it sounds like! You buy a ticket for one or two days depending on how long you think seeing the attractions will take you. The bus stops at every major attraction in the city. When you get to a location you want to explore, just hop off the bus. When you are done and want to keep moving forward, hop on the next bus that comes by. It’s that easy!

Why a Hop On Hop Off Bus?

The benefit of this type of bus versus typical public transportation is there is only one bus route if you want to explore Sydney (the red line) and a second route if you want to visit Bondi Beach (the blue line). That means no (or limited) bus transfers and you only have to pay once. They also stop at each major attraction which means you won’t be wandering the city lost. Both routes also go in a circle, so you will end up back where you started.

The best part: you are given a pair of earbuds when you first get on the bus which you plug in to the seat in front of you. This allows you to listen to an audio tour while the bus drives which enhances your experience of the city as a whole. These audio tours are available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. It’s the easiest and most educational way to see all the main sights!

Red Line – Main Attractions

The hop on hop off bus red line hits the main Sydney attractions visitors dream of seeing! From Darling Harbor to the Sydney Opera House, you will see every main attraction along this route! There are some lesser-known stops that are really cool if you have the time to see everything on the list. I would recommend getting a two-day pass if you want to explore each and every stop. With a one-day pass, my family had to pick which key places we really wanted to see. This worked out perfect for us because we only had a handful of places on our personal must-see list, but others may need more time. The Sydney Opera House is one particular icon many people want to visit. Find out what tours are available before you go!

Below is the list of all 23 stops on the red line (via Viator). To see a map of the red and blue lines, click here.

Blue Line – Main Attractions

The blue line is your connection from the city to Bondi Beach! Most of the stops on this route are along the beach. Some people may choose not to go on this bus as the red line already hits most of the top attractions. Bondi Beach is a popular destination because of the amazing beach and cute downtown area. I personally loved my visit and really enjoyed having dinner with a view of the ocean!

Below is the list of all 8 stops on the blue line (via Viator). You will notice some of these stops are the same as the red line. These are places where the lines intersect so you can get off of one line and hop on the other. To see a map of the red and blue lines, click here.

  • Central Station, Pitt Street, Bus Bay 18
  • Australian Museum
  • Paddington Town Hall, Oxford St
  • Oxford St opp Moncur St

Anna’s Pick of the Week

If you are going to be away from your hotel all day, you are going to need some necessities with you. Having a nice, small backpack like this one is perfect because it can hold what you need and has padding so it is easy on your shoulders. Whenever I travel I use this exact backpack, so I can verify that it is roomy yet comfortable!

Sydney Opera House Tour | Visiting Guide

Sydney is an amazing city and is home to one of the most famous buildings in the world: the Sydney Opera House. Visitors may not know what to expect. Is a Sydney Opera House tour worth the cost? Which tour is right for me? Everything you need to know when visiting the Sydney Opera House is outlined right here for you! In this guide, I’ll go over:

  • How to get there
  • What tours options and details
  • Cost of tours
  • Photo opportunities

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

How to Get There

If you are staying in Sydney, decide if you are close enough to walk or cycle to the opera house using the city’s bike sharing program. Ubers and taxis are also available if you are staying a bit further away. All of these public transportation options are great, but the best way to get to the opera house as well as other local attractions is by riding the hop-on-hop-off bus. This is a great option as it is one price to ride the bus all day. You pass by every major Sydney attraction, including the Sydney Opera House. When you get to something you want to see, simply get off at that stop. When you are ready to continue your journey, hop on the next bus. It’s really that easy! I have gone on these kinds of buses in several places around the world and I think it is the easiest way to see the highlights of any city.

Sydney Opera House Tour Options

The Sydney Opera House Tour

This is the tour my family went on during our visit and is the expected tour most people are looking for. In this tour you are led by a guide through the inside and around the outside of the opera house. Inside the opera house you get to see at least on of the theaters. The specific one you visit varies depending on what performances are going on at the time. Along the way you learn about the architecture and history of the building, which was fascinating to me. One thing I loved about the tour was how easy it was to hear the tour guide. Everyone on the tour wore headsets and the guide wore a headset with a microphone. The guide’s voice was projected into our headsets so there was no fear of missing out on something interesting. Tours are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin.

Backstage Tour

If you want to see first-hand what goes on behind the scenes of a performance, this tour could be for you! See the dressing rooms used by cast members, orchestra pits, hear backstage stories, and more! I did not get a chance to go on this tour myself, but as a theater lover I would definitely be interested in taking this tour on my next visit. In order to avoid interfering with performances, this tour is only offered once a day at 7am. Breakfast is provided at the end of the tour.

Tour and Dine

This option is the same as the Sydney Opera House Tour with the addition of a meal with great views of both the opera house and the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Taste of the Opera House

This is a special tour available only once per month! If you are visiting from out of town, be sure to book far ahead of time. This tour allows visitors to eat at four different areas around the opera house for one cost. Any foodie would surely love this opera house experience!

Cost of Tours

Sydney Opera House Tour: $42

Backstage Tour: $175

Tour and Dine: $73

Taste of the Opera House: $295

Photo Opportunities

On your own you are welcome to take as many photos as you’d like! If you purchase a tour, a cameraman will take a photo of your group in front of a green screen. After the tour you have the option to purchase this professional photograph with a background of our choosing, or you can opt for a photo book with several different backgrounds. While this is a fun addition to the tours, I personally prefer to have the real deal in the background. The good news is many people visit the opera house, so you are sure to find someone willing to take a group photo for you!

The Top 5 Ways to Experience Ayers Rock (Uluru)

Ayers Rock is located in the Australian Outback. Known by the native Anagua as “Uluru”, it is a sacred site where they believe ancient spirits from the area lay to rest (1). Previously, the best way to experience this world wonder was to climb it. However, out of respect for the spiritual beliefs of the Anagua, climbing Ayers Rock is no longer an option. Don’t let that discourage you! Visiting the biggest rock in the world is incredible any way you do it! I have five amazing ways to experience Ayers Rock, ending with my personal favorite.

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

#5 – Segway

Segway tours can be a fun and unique way to visit Ayers Rock. There are several Segway options ranging from self-guided experiences to tours of the landscape with a guide (2). If you have never ridden a Segway before it can feel weird, but you get the hang of it in just a few minutes. Should you go this route, I would recommend wearing a scarf or something you can cover your face with while you ride. The Segways can kick up quite a bit of dust which can be bothersome. If you choose to visit during the day (not sunrise or sunset), I would also recommend wearing a bug net like this one. Realistically, any time you are outside in the outback you should be wearing a bug net. I had not brought one with me and I ended up buying one within the first few hours of landing because they’re everywhere.

#4 – Ayers Rock Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus

Did you know there are incredible views in the outback in addition to Ayers Rock? With a one- or two-day hop-on-hop-off bus pass, you can experience these sites at your own pace (3). If you have ridden a hop-on-hop-off bus before, you know how convenient they are. I also recommend them if you are planning to visit Sydney. The buses go around their route and stop at each designated location. Get off the bus when you are ready to adventure, and catch the next bus when you are ready to move on. This option will require you to have all of your gear for the day on-hand, which is easy using a backpack like this one. I use a backpack like this one whenever I travel and it perfectly fits everything I need for the day.

#3 – Rent a Car

Ayers Rock (Uluru), Australia

Renting a car seems like the most obvious way to visit Ayers Rock, so why is it number three on the list? Because of the freedom it gives you! Renting a car allows you to get just as close to the rocks as any other experience, but you can do it at your own pace. You don’t have to worry about packing everything for the day on your back, and you can stay later than the hop-on-hop-off buses run for amazing views of the stars! The Outback is the best place in the world for stargazing, so you don’t want to miss this opportunity!

#2 – Helicopter

An unforgettable way to experience Ayers Rock is by air. Helicopter tours may be one of the more expensive options, but for good reason. These amazing tours give you a view that no other tour can. These tours can be as short as 15 minutes, or as long as 40 minutes (4). For thrill seekers, you can also choose to skydive!

#5 – Experience Ayers Rock My Favorite Way: By Camel

Ayers Rock (Uluru), Australia

My personal favorite way to experience Ayers Rock is by camel. These tours typically occur during sunrise and sunset. The closest you get to the rock is shown in the photo I took above, so if you are wanting to get close and personal with Ayers Rock I would recommend going with a car or bus. That being said, I would recommend traveling by camel if you get the chance. These tours have guides that take photos of you during the adventure and you can purchase all of the pictures on a USB drive when you are done. Fun fact: the Australian Outback is home of the largest population of wild camels in the world!

I hope you feel inspired to visit this amazing wonder! Which experience is your favorite? Let me know in the comments! Wanting more information on Australia attractions? Check out my post on the Sydney Opera House!

Anna’s Pick of the Week

The Australian Outback has a TON of bugs! My family started wearing jackets over our heads and quickly realized we needed bug nets. They may look silly, but they’re a life saver! It’s hard to enjoy the beauty of Ayers Rock when you are constantly slapping yourself. A bug net is a necessity if you are going to the Outback!
